Feets Across History and the World

I have been attempting to round my education about running. I have found amazing accomplishments of past and current athletes. I am going to share a timeline of these achievements as I come across them.

  • 2014: Zoe Romano runs the complete Tour de France course in 11 weeks and raises nearly $200,000 for the World Pediatric Project.
  • May 12th 1984: Joan Benoit Samuelson wins first Women's Marathon in the Olympics in LA in stunning fashion with a time of 2:31:04. She broke away from the pack after 4 miles and led the way to the finish line alone.
  • 1966: First woman to compete in Boston Marathon. Bobbi Gibb trained for 2 years and then was told that women could not run. She hid in the bushes and popped out after the gun went off. Bobbi finished, with the support of the male runners, ahead of 2/3 of the  marathon runners.
  • 1954: First ever 4 minute mile
  • 776 BC: first ever Olympics, primarily foot races. Victors were given an Olive Wreath, money and, amusingly, vats of olive oil.
  • Tailteann Games:started somewhere between 1829BC to 632BC, the games were an annual tribute to funerals and the Goddess Tailtin in late summer.
